SU Theatre Welcomes Guest Artist
SU THEATRE WELCOMES TIMOTHY MOONEY FEBRUARY 4
The Southern Union Fine Arts Department is pleased to welcome acclaimed author and actor Timothy Mooney to the Renaissance Center on the Wadley Campus on February 4, for a one night only performance.
Traveling throughout North America to celebrate the life of Shakespeare and bring attention to the great playwright’s work, Mooney performs several one man plays designed to “crack the code” on Shakespeare’s most challenging works, making them accessible to audiences everywhere.
“Mooney has the ability to put a comedic spin on the classics opening them up to a variety of audiences,” commented Michael Williams, Director of Theatre at SUSCC. “We are delighted to welcome him to Southern Union.”
The former Artistic Director of Chicago’s Stage Two Theatre where he produced nearly fifty plays in five years; Mooney will perform two pieces while visiting SU: The Greatest Speeches of All Time and Shakespeare’s Histories. In the Greatest Speeches, Mooney leads the audience through the words that shaped history as they were being spoken. Historic speeches by Frederick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Winston Churchill are only a few of the highlights.
In the second act of the evening, Mooney combines the most brilliant speeches of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays into a single hour long performance in Shakespeare’s Histories. Mooney notes, “It’s amazing when you realize that all of these famous lines, words that live in our everyday language, had their origins in these obscure plays.”
Performances begin at 7 p.m. Central Time. Admission is free, but seating is limited. For more information, contact Williams at 256-395-2211.
