ORI 101 – Orientation to College
All new students who have not previously attended college are required to register for and complete Orientation to College (ORI 101) their first semester at Southern Union. Transfer students who have successfully completed at least 18 quarter hours or 12 semester hours with a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at a regionally accredited institution are exempt from Orientation to College.
A complete syllabus and list of requirement are avalible both within Canvas and will be distributed during the first class meeting. ORI 101 students will be required to attend orientation sessions at the beginning of the semester. The meeting dates are printed on the student's class schedule. In addition to the meetings, students will also be required to complete tests within Canvas and meet with their assigned advisor to successfully complete ORI 101. Opelika and Valley Only:
A complete syllabus and list of requirement are available both within Canvas and in the Office of Student Development. ORI 101 students will be able to log into CANVAS beginning on the first day of the semester. Students will be required to complete a series of tests within Canvas and meet with their assigned advisor to successfully complete ORI 101. Please note the tests deadlines are within the first two weeks of class. You may access Canvas directly here or by selecting the Canvas tab located within the yellow bar at the top of this page. ORI 107: STUDENT SURVIVAL SKILLS / ORIENTATION TO COLLEGE
for first semester college freshmen who plan to apply for a health sciences program
ORI 107 is a 1 credit hour course required for all first semester college freshmen who plan to pursue a healthcare program at Southern Union. It is designed to provide future health sciences students the information needed to improve their success in a college environment with an emphasis on success in healthcare programs. Specific topics include test taking skills, study skills, time management, student success, orientation to college and professionalism. Attendance at meetings will be reflected in grade for course.
Meeting Locations: Classes will meet on the Opelika Campus in the Health Sciences Building for those students who are registered for Opelika or Valley Campus classes. (Valley students should note that classes meet on central time.) Students on Wadley Campus will meet in the Science Technology Building, room 112 and the session will be through distance learning.
**Login to Canvas and read the syllabus prior to the meeting date. You will receive part of your grade in the course through attendance.
You will be able to login to CANVAS after classes begin to find your group’s meeting room, course syllabus, course grades, course test and lecture notes. Go to the following web site: https://suscc.instructure.com/login. You will find directions there for signing in to your account. After you successfully login to CANVAS, click on the link for ORI 107 to access the course information.
All students will have a student email account available to them as soon as classes begin for the semester. To sign in to your Student email account, click on the "Student Email" link on the SUSCC homepage and read directions for getting started. You will receive email reminders and notices through this email account only.
IMPORTANT: You will not be able to login to CANVAS or student email until tuition has been paid or your financial aid has cleared/paid. You also cannot sign in until after classes begin for the semester. If you registered early and have trouble signing in to CANVAS after the semester has begun, contact Nancy Bramlett at email@example.com. If you register during late registration it may take 2 or more days for your CANVAS account to be set up.
NOTE: Before contacting your instructor, make sure you are registered for ORI 107 STUDENT SURVIVAL SKILLS. This is not for students registered in ORI 101.
