Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

Students must apply for admission to the EMT program and be accepted into the program before they are eligible to take EMS courses. Students may apply for the program after meeting admission requirements for the College and the program. In addition to the general admission requirements for the College, admission to the EMT level requires:

  • Health Sciences Information Session Attendance Verification.
  • unconditional admission to the College.
  • 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at Southern Union.
  • transfer students who have never attended Southern Union must enter on clear academic status (minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA).
  • transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended.
  • proof of eligibility for English Composition I, Intermediate College Algebra (Mth 100) and satisfaction of the College’s reading requirement. Click here to find out if you need placement testing.
  • application for the Emergency Medical Technician Program by priority deadline date however, applications will be accepted until class is full.
  • age of 18 years or older within one (1) year of program completion.
  • ability to meet and comply with standards and policies in the current College Catalog and Student Handbook

Health Requirements and Forms

After acceptance to the EMS program but prior to enrolling in EMS courses,  students must provide Southern Union State Community College with the required health care data. Clinical agencies mandate that students provide information regarding their current health status (annual physical and essential functions) that may affect the safety of the student or the client in the clinical settings. Click here for health forms and requirements checklist. Students may not register for EMS classes if the required clinical documents are not up to date. 

Background Checks and Drug Screening

After admission to a health sciences program at SUSCC,  students must complete a comprehensive background check and drug screening. Background checks and drug screening will be conducted by one vendor approved by the clinical agencies.  Students who do not clear the Background Check will not be allowed to register for EMS courses. Students who do not pass the drug screening will be withdrawn from the EMS program. Find more information on the Background Check and Drug Screening by clicking here.

Health Insurance

Students in the Health Sciences must demonstrate proof of health insurance.  Students without proof of health insurance will not be allowed to register for health sciences courses or attend clinical. If you do not have insurance you may obtain information regarding insurance offered to SUSCC students at or call 1-877-272-4532.
