Program Information

Accreditation:   The Surgical Technology Program has continuing accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL 33756. Degree Earned: Certificate in Surgical Technology or Associate in Applied Science in Surgical Technology

Length of Program: Certificate: Three semesters (36-49 semester hours)
                                Associate in Applied Science: Five semesters (64-73 semester hours)

Note:  Total program hours may vary with optional BIO 103 or BIO 111 (previously SUR107), 201 & 202 courses and/or additional SUR practicum courses.

Credentials Earned: Students who complete the Surgical Technology program are required to sit for the national certification exam.  The exam will be given at Southern Union upon completion of the program.

*BIO 201 is a prerequisite for BIO 202, Anatomy & Physiology II. BIO 103 is not required for the certificate if students take BIO 111, (previously SUR 107).  Students may elect to take either BIO 111, Survey of Human Biology (previously SUR 107, Surgical Anatomy & Physiology) or take both BIO 201 and BIO 202, Anatomy & Physiology I and II to meet certificate requirements.

**SUR 107 is offered only as online courses. Students who have never completed an online course must take ORI 111, Online Learning Basics, as a co-requisite to their first online course.  SUR 107 cannot be used to satisfy graduation requirements for the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology.

If you are transferring from other colleges or universities, you should check with an Academic Advisor regarding transfer of your course(s).
