COVID-19 UPDATE

January 12, 2023

Southern Union State Community College has made available Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds III- American Rescue Plan (ARP) to students who have experienced exceptional need for assistance to finish covering tuition and fee expenses for the Spring 2023 semester. The emergency online application below must be completed and submitted in order to be considered. Students must have an outstanding balance due on their account for the current term. No funds will be released to the student, but instead applied to their student accounts. Funds awarded will not exceed outstanding balance due. Submission of an Emergency Relief Request Application does not guarantee approval. Funds are limited. The deadline to submit a request for assistance is January 17, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. (cst).

This release of funds is for students enrolled in Spring 2022 – Mini #2 only and/or who has not already received a disbursement for the semester. SUSCC understands how difficult it has been to sustain during this national pandemic. To aid in additional unexpected expenses, SUSCC has released Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA) grant funds in the amount of $125 to all full time (12 credit hours or more) students who completed Spring 2021 semester successfully (earned credit). Students enrolled in Health Science programs and completed the Spring 2021 semester successfully will receive $276.54 in CRRSAA grant funds. To be considered for this grant, you must have been enrolled for Spring 2021 semester and meet all citizenship requirements set by the U. S. Department of Education for federal aid eligibility.

Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (Grant Funds)

On December 27, 2020, the President signed the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA). This new law provides the U.S. Department of Education with funds to distribute to institutions of higher education in order to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). These funds are earmarked to support students that have experienced unexpected financial challenges as a result of the coronavirus pandemic related to any component of their cost of attending school - such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care) or child care.

We are happy to report that the College has received Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA) grant funds in the amount of $1,598, 050.00 to provide financial assistance to relieve you of the financial burden you may have faced during this national pandemic. To be considered, you must have been enrolled for the Spring 2021 semester and meet all citizenship requirements set by the U. S. Department of Education for federal aid eligibility. You will be notified via email if you are eligible to receive the HEERF II grant funds. Amounts could range from $300 – $600. All eligible students enrolled that meet the citizenship requirement will receive the base amount of $300. Those with a “0” EFC based on the 2020/2021 FAFSA displays exceptional need and will receive the maximum award of $600. Additional funds will be released to cover up to $300 in past due balances resulting from the pandemic that occurred in Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters 2020. Funds will be released soon. SUSCC has received notice that 11 students have tested positive for COVID-19 this week and are currently quarantined and receiving medical treatment in accordance with public health protocols. Out of an abundance of caution and in our efforts to stem the spread of the Covid-19 virus we will be notifying the instructor and all students in the students’ classes will be notified, to the extent possible, and these individuals will be asked to self-quarantine for the next 14 days.

Health and safety remain our number one priority. SUSCC is following medical protocols from state and national health authorities and has implemented recommended guidelines in relation to social distancing, hygiene, travel, and visits to the College. In addition, we are taking additional steps to attempt to ensure the cleanliness or all of our facilities. While we hope and pray this will be the only positive tests for COVID-19 within our College community, in the event there are others of which we become aware, we will use our best efforts to notify those we are able to determine have had contact with that individual so they may take recommended health measures. The College is committed to keeping you updated on the local COVID-19 risk and will provide direction to our staff, students and families with additional instruction as appropriate.

SUSCC final disbursement of grant funds were chosen to be released to students who display financial need based on a “0” Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) calculation on the 2019/2020 FAFSA. Additionally, these are students that did not receive grant funds such as SEOG or ASAP throughout the academic year. The limited source of funds were released on 06/17/2020. Southern Union State Community College is currently reviewing students for eligibility for the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act grant funds. The college has received funds from the United States Department of Education to disburse to all eligible students enrolled in a traditional course that transitioned to an on-line course due to COVID-19.

In order to be considered for eligibility, students must:

Have a 2019-2020 FAFSA on file with Southern Union State Community College federal school code listed (001040) with a valid EFC
Meet Title IV guidelines in order to qualify to receive federal assistance
Enrolled for Spring 2020 semester courses as of March 16, 2020 (students who withdrew from all courses prior to the said date or enrolled mini term #1 courses that ended on March 3, 2020 do not qualify)
Enrolled in at least one (1) traditional course that transitioned to an on-line course due to COVID-19 (students enrolled in ALL online courses do not qualify)

Students who have already submitted a FAFSA for the 2019/2020 academic year has been reviewed for eligibility. Those who do not have a current FAFSA on file, you may complete the application online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. Be sure to include federal
school code 001040. The deadline to submit the FAFSA is June 04, 2020. If not submitted and processed by the above date, you will not be considered for the CARES Act grant funds.
Once awarded, funds will be released through the same method selected through Heartland ECSI for other financial aid disbursements; paper check or direct deposit. If no option selected, funds will be released by paper check to the address listed on the student admissions record.

The following would be required of students enrolled as of March 16, 2020 for spring semester in order to be considered for the $300 grant who did not already have a 2019/2020 FAFSA on file:

Southern Union State Community College will continue online or alternate delivery instruction through summer semester. Limited face-to-face offerings in specialized courses in the health sciences and technical divisions will occur later in the summer as allowed. Summer classes begin May 18.

A breakdown of summer instruction via each instructional division is as follows:

Academic
Courses in the academic division will be taught online. The usual fee associated with online courses will be waived, as will the online orientation course that is required for first-time online courses. Students who have already registered for on-campus classes will be transitioned to the online course and will be contacted.

Health Sciences
Health Sciences will begin the semester with online instruction teaching the theory portion of the courses. A method of conducting hands-on lab time will be determined and announced to each class. This face to face instruction will occur mid to late semester. Admission for the nursing program scheduled to begin this summer on the Wadley campus has been delayed to fall. Students who have been admitted to this program will maintain their spot in the cohort.

Technical Education and Workforce Development
The Technical and Workforce Development Division will conduct instruction via a hybrid method beginning with the theory portion of courses taught online. The hands-on labs will be completed on campus later in the summer. In the event that a lab is unable to meet at full capacity, a staggered lab schedule will be developed to ensure that each student is brought on campus. For example, if students are able to return at 25% capacity using personal protection equipment, three to four students would attend lab for a few hours then rotate more students, repeating until all students have had the opportunity to come on campus and complete their hands-on competencies.

In accordance with Governor Ivey’s recommendations and through guidance by the Alabama Community College System, Southern Union State Community College will continue online instruction through the remainder of the semester.

We understand that you may need extra tIme to adjust during this transition, so the last day to withdraw with a “W” from a full term or Mini-term 2 class has been extended to April 22. You are able to withdraw using your mySUSCC portal through April 1. Beginning April 2, you may use the following form to withdraw: https://www.suscc.edu/about-suscc/extwithdrawal.cms

We will have summer classes, so remember to register beginning April 6! Information and a class schedule can be found here. The method of delivery (on-campus or online) is yet to be determined. We will communicate that as soon as we know something further.

Summer term registration is coming up! Currently enrolled students can register online via mySUSCC beginning April 6.

New students should contact an advisor to register. Instructions on how to reach an advisor can be found under remote advising.

As a reminder, new students need to be sure that they have completed an admissions application, have sent in a copy of their transcripts and have emailed a copy of their driver's license to admissions@suscc.edu.

Summer Term classes begin May 18. Decisions regarding the manner in which summer courses will be offered (on-campus or remotely) will be made in the near future.

Classes will resume via Canvas tomorrow, March 18. You should receive an email form your instructor today or tomorrow with instructions on how to access your coursework. In the interest of the health and safety of our students, Southern Union will extend Spring Break for students through Tuesday, March 17. We ask that students refrain from returning to campus after spring break. Classes will resume via an alternative instruction method on Wednesday, March 18 and continue through at least April 3.

Instructions on how to continue your academic coursework will be emailed to you by Tuesday.

To ensure appropriate "social distancing", all student and campus activities are canceled beginning Wednesday, March 18 through April 3. Per the Alabama Community College Conference, all athletic events are suspended through March 30. The Residence Hall will be closed through April 3. Further information will be relayed to resident hall students. Advising will also be conducted via alternate methods.

Students should check their student email frequently as communication will be through that channel. Updates will also be posted on this page.

The information below is provided in compliance with the Department of Education’s CARES Act Reporting requirements. The information in this report was compiled on June 30, 2020 and will be updated every quarter.

An acknowledgement that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Southern Union State Community College signed and returned the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) Agreement to receive CARES Act funding on April 30, 2020. SUSCC has used no less than 50% of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Grants to students.

The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

Southern Union State Community College received funds in the amount of $1,598,050 from the US Department of Education for CARES Emergency Financial Aid Grants to be distributed to students.

The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).

As of June 30, 2020, Southern Union State Community College had distributed $1,598,050 directly to eligible students, in accordance with Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

Southern Union State Community College had approximately 3,827 students eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act. The CARES Act provides emergency financial aid grant funds to address the financial need of students due to the disruption of campus operations and the related expenses they incurred. Therefore, the CARES Act limited eligibility of emergency grants to students who were actively participating in courses and programs that were not exclusively online on or after March 16. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education determined that international and undocumented students were not eligible for federal grants.

Within the total population, institutions were instructed to determine eligibility criteria for distribution of the grant and encouraged to prioritize students with the greatest need.

The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

As of June 30, 2020, Southern Union State Community College had distributed CARES Act funds to 3,827 eligible students.

The method(s) used by the institution to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

The federal government instructed Southern Union State Community College to determine eligibility criteria for distribution of emergency financial aid grant and encouraged the college to prioritize students with the greatest need.

Southern Union State Community College notified recipients by email notifying them of their potential eligibility for CARES Act funds. The eligibility email was sent to Southern Union email address and announcement was posted https://www.suscc.edu/covid.cms

Award range was from $300 to $1,519 per student for a total of $1,598,050.
