Program Overview

The Therapeutic Massage Certificate program is designed to prepare individuals to work as licensed massage therapists. LMT (licensed massage therapist) may be self-employed or employed at health clubs, medical clinics, chiropractor offices, athletic departments, spas, salons, and holistic health centers.

Upon successful completion of the program, students may seek licensure from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and/or licensure through a state board of massage therapy. The field of Therapeutic Massage is vastly growing and constantly seeking outgoing, energetic individuals to fulfill the health care needs of client demands.

The Therapeutic Massage program is a day program that lasts three semesters. New students may enter the program in the spring of each year and graduate in the fall of the same year. Classes meet four days (Monday-Thursday) a week at Southern Union’s downtown campus in Opelika, AL. This program includes a variety of teaching methods; classroom lecture, hands on lab, clinical sessions, and outreach opportunities to ensure student’s success upon graduation. A separate application for admission to the program is required.
Please contact Health Sciences Admissions or Advising for more information.

Professional Licensure in other states and territories:
Southern Union State Community College has not determined if the Therapeutic Massage Program at SUSCC meets the Therapeutic Massage state education requirements in other states, any U.S. Territory, or the District of Columbia.  Students who reside in a state other than Alabama should contact the specific licensing agency in the state or territory where they plan to seek licensure to find additional educational requirements.
