Admission Requirements for EMT Basic, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic
Level One - EMT Basic
Students must apply for admission to the EMT program and be accepted into the program before they are eligible to take EMS courses. Students may apply for the program after meeting admission requirements for the College and the program. In addition to the general admission requirements for the College, admission to the EMT level requires:

- unconditional admission to the College (see College Catalog for requirements);
- Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at Southern Union. Transfer students who have never attended Southern Union must enter college with minimum 2.0 cumulative gpa (GPA Calculator);
- official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended in Records Office;
- eligibility for English 101 and Math 100; Click here to find out if you need placement testing.
- application for the Emergency Medical Technician program by priority deadline date. However, applications will be accepted until class is full.
- ability to meet and comply with standards and policies in the current College Catalog and Student Handbook.
Level Two - Advanced EMT (AEMT)
Students must apply for admission to the AEMT program and be accepted into the program before they are eligible to take EMS courses. Students may apply for the program after meeting admission requirements for the College and the program. - current National Registry license for EMT.
- unencumbered Alabama licensure as an EMT (transfer students should refer to notice* below).

*Transfer students: Students who completed EMT training from a non-accredited program and plan to transfer in as a licensed EMT must take EMS108, Directed Students in EMS I, as a co-requisite with EMS 156, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Clinical. Upon completion of EMS108 with a grade of 75 or higher, the student will be awarded 10 hours of academic credit.
Level Three - Paramedic
Students wishing to enter the Paramedic program must apply for admission to the College and apply for admission to the EMT-Paramedic program. Before applying for admission to the Paramedic program, student must meet all admission requirements listed below. Students who do not meet the minimal admission requirements will not be considered for acceptance to the program. Meeting minimal application requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program. (Please note that application requirements and procedures may change without prior notice. Check with Health Sciences Division and/or website for updates prior to applying.)

- current Alabama license as an AEMT or successfully completed AEMT from an accredited college by SACSCOC or one of six regionally accrediting agencies; (students who took EMT / AEMT from a non-accredited program should see *note below)
- ability to meet and comply with standards and policies in the current College Catalog and Student Handbook.
*NOTE: Students transferring into the paramedic level who have graduated from a non-accredited AEMT program must take EMS 156, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Clinical, as a corequisite to EMS 244. Upon completion of EMS156 with a grade of 75 or higher, the student will be awarded 10 hours of academic credit. If a student has attended a non-accredited program for both EMT and AEMT, the student must take EMS 156 and EMS 108 as a co-requisite to EMS 244. Upon completion of EMS 108 and EMS 156 with a grade of 75 or higher, the student will be awarded 20 hours of academic credit.
