Background Checks

After admission to a health sciences program at SUSCC, students must complete a comprehensive background check and drug screening with the link provided by SUSCC.

Background Checks

Southern Union is contractually obligated to comply with requirements set forth by agencies used for clinical rotations. All health sciences students are required to have background checks and drug screens completed to meet the requirements of clinical agencies. Background checks will be conducted by the vendor approved by the clinical agencies.

Upon admission to a health sciences program, students will be sent a link to the vendor website and given a timeline for completing the background check and drug screening. Students contract directly with the approved vendor and results are confidential. The clinical agency (ies) will make the decision to approve or deny the student for clinical privileges. Refusal by an agency to accept a student will prevent a student from completing the health sciences program. The student will be responsible for clearing any denials reported from the clinical agency. Students who are unable to resolve denials will be withdrawn from the Health Science Program.   Please refer to the student handbook for the particular healthcare program for which you plan to apply for complete policy.

After receiving an acceptance letter from the program for which you have applied, follow the directions to submit payment and information for the background check and drug screening through the agency's website listed in your email.  The criminal background check will include but may not be limited to the following: Unlimited Criminal County Level Search, SSN Trace, OIG Search, National Sex Offender Search, OFAC Search, and EPLS Search.   Your school's health records clerk will receive background check results.

Drug Screening

Drug screening will be conducted [prior or during] the first semester of coursework.  Students who do not pass the drug screen will be withdrawn from the health sciences program.  Drug screens will be conducted by the vendor approved by the clinical agency. You will receive an email with the link to the vendor website.

The drug screening will test for, but may not be limited to, the following substances:

  • Amphetamine
  • Barbiturate
  • Benzodiazepine
  • Cannabinoid
  • Cocaine
  • Metabolite
  • Opiate
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Methadone
